In October 2013, Cyclone Phailin struck near Gopalpur on India's east coast. While it was the strongest landfall in India in 14 years, insured losses were low because the storm affected a relatively sparsely populated region.

An AIR Worldwide analysis, conducted at the request of the General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re), reveals that significantly higher losses are possible.
